A lot of "self-defense classes" are a single two-hour seminar: a few techniques shown once, never drilled again. At Grit & Glory, self-defense isn't a seminar — it's part of the regular Teens & Adults curriculum, practiced every week until it's muscle memory instead of something you half-remember from one Saturday afternoon.
Why a One-Off Seminar Isn't Enough
Technique you've seen once doesn't hold up under stress. Real self-defense competence comes from repetition: drilling a response until your body does it before you've consciously decided to. That only happens through ongoing training, which is exactly what a weekly taekwondo class gives you that a single workshop can't.
What You Actually Train
- Awareness and avoidance first. The best self-defense is the fight you never have to be in — reading a situation early and removing yourself from it.
- A voice you're ready to use. A firm, loud response is often enough to de-escalate a situation before it becomes physical.
- Technique against a live, resisting partner. Drills are practiced with a real training partner, not a static pad, so what you learn actually works against resistance.
- Composure under pressure. Sparring teaches you to stay clear-headed while someone is coming at you — the exact state you need in a real confrontation.
- Physical technique as a last resort. Strikes, blocks, and escapes are part of the belt syllabus, meant to create an opening to get away, not to win a fight.
Who This Is For
You don't need to be chasing a black belt to train here for this reason alone. Some of our adult students are focused purely on self-defense and fitness and have zero interest in competing — that's a completely normal way to train at Grit & Glory, and you'll follow the same curriculum and earn the same belts as anyone else, at your own pace.
Taught by Competitors
Classes are led by coaches who've competed nationally and internationally, including our Head Coach, a SEA Games medalist and ASEAN champion. Training under coaches who've been tested at that level — not just certified to teach — is what separates real self-defense training from a weekend workshop.

Common Questions
Is this a separate self-defense class, or part of regular taekwondo training?
Self-defense is woven into the regular Teens & Adults curriculum, not a standalone class — so you get ongoing practice instead of a single session.
Do I need to be fit to start?
No. Classes are scaled to every level, and fitness is something you build by training, not a prerequisite.
Will I spar on my first day?
No. Sparring is introduced gradually and is always supervised and scaled to your level.
Do I have to work toward competition?
No. Competition is entirely optional — many adults train purely for self-defense and fitness and never enter a tournament.
