Home Practice Guide: How to Help Your Child Train Between Classes

You don't need a big space or any equipment to support your child's Taekwondo progress at home. Here's how.

Why Home Practice Matters

Students who practice between classes progress roughly twice as fast as those who only train during scheduled sessions. More importantly, home practice turns Taekwondo into a family activity rather than just "the thing they do on Tuesdays."

What to Practice at Home

White and Yellow Belts (Beginners)

Stances (5–10 minutes) Have your child practice holding a front stance (ap seogi) and walking stance (ap kubi) for 30 seconds each. Correct feet position: front foot pointing forward, back foot at 45°.

Basic kicks (5 minutes) Front kick (ap chagi): lift the knee to the chest, snap the foot forward, return. Aim for 10 slow repetitions per leg, focusing on balance.

Form practice Ask the instructor for the name of the current form. Search "WTF [form name] tutorial" on YouTube for reference. Practice 3 slow run-throughs, focusing on accuracy over speed.

Colored Belts

  • Full form run-throughs (3–5 times)
  • Combination drilling against a wall pad or cushion
  • Flexibility stretching: butterfly stretch, standing quad stretch, seated forward fold (hold 30 seconds each)

Space Requirements

You need roughly 3×3 meters of clear floor space — a living room with furniture pushed aside works perfectly. Bare feet on a flat surface is ideal.

Keeping It Fun

  • Keep sessions short: 10–15 minutes maximum for under-8s; 20–30 minutes for older students
  • Let your child show you the techniques rather than drilling them
  • React with genuine enthusiasm when they get something right
  • Never push through frustration — end on a positive note

What NOT to Do

  • Don't correct technique based on your own guesses — video and show the instructor instead
  • Don't reward practice with screen time (it undermines intrinsic motivation)
  • Don't skip rest days — recovery is part of training
